It’s not just the big boys

Date: Saturday June 13th, 2020

We’ve spoken about big names responding well to the challenges of lockdown. But we’ve noticed lots of local businesses in Ringwood, The New Forest, Bournemouth and surrounding areas doing a great job at adapting and overcoming the issue of social distancing.

I don’t know about you but we’ve been CRAVING a pub garden ever since the sun came out! But our locals have been proving that they’re robust and able to tackle anything that comes their way. By getting creative, some have been thriving during lockdown, offering takeaway meals, pints and even online quizzes! Here a run down of some who have really caught our eye:

Fighting Cocks - Fordingbride

Not only can you get a takeaway pasty (as well as other goods), that I can say through personal experience was delicious, you can also get 4 PINTS of takeaway beer or cider. Yes you heard us right - 4 pints. There is something great about taking a stroll in the forest with 4 pints of cider in a milk carton and definitely something we would be interested in carrying on post lock down... Wink wink. But if you’re not sharing (we don’t recommend 4 pints by yourself) they are also offering single pint options, but £13.50 for 4 pints and the biggest pasty I’ve ever seen, could you blame us for getting the big boy? Anyway, if you’re not a beer or cider drinker they also have wine to take away too, but these are by the bottle so we only recommend it if you’re sharing!

The Londoner Tavern - Ringwood

Now these guys really have taken the bull by the horns and shown us how it’s done. With a fabulous Tav ‘comeandgetit’ takeaway menu for pre-order, that can be picked up from their wonderful LT Truck, they have been doing virtual pub quizzes! With the entire nation taking to zoom for quizzes it’s no surprise that pubs have got innovative with it as well. But if all that wasn’t enough to impress you, they have opened up a scheme allowing members of the community to donate a roast dinner for key workers. Every Sunday a set amount are set aside for our key workers, paid for by members of the public - what a fabulous idea.

The Royal Oak - North Gorley

Another one of our favourite locals serving up a delicious takeaway menu! Sadly no takeaway pints as such here, but you can order a bottle of something to go with your meal. We’ve heard rave reviews about their burgers as well as their fish and chips. There’s no missing out on good quality pub grub here. And if you fancy your hand at multiple pub quizzes The Royal Oak are also offering weekly zoom quizzes!

The Horse & Groom - Fordingbridge AND Bat & Ball - Breamore These lovely sister pubs have also been putting all the stops out during lockdown. Ever since restrictions started they have been offering takeaway food and drink and with beer at £2.00 a pint - how could you say no! But as well as food and drinks you can now pick up perfect picnic snacks if you get caught hungry while you’re out on your family walk; with strawberries and clotted cream, ice creams and crisps on offer.! Our pubs are always the heart of our communities and with these pubs offering a Senior Citizens section 12:00-14:00 Mon-Fri it’s easy to remember why.

The Wight Bear - Southbourne

If you’ve been missing live music during lockdown, keeping an eye on these guys' socials might be just what you need. On their facebook page The Wight Bear team have been hosting social distanced live gigs. And if you want a beer to enjoy while watching these gigs you can order online with same day delivery FREE of charge. Now that is customer service. But if you fancy getting out of the house their doors are open to purchase a great range of beer, lager and cider all on draught or from their bottle shop. They are operating social distancing measures and only allowing 2 people in their ‘shop’ at a time, so the perfect place to pick up some unique pints to enjoy at home or down the beach.
